Georgia’s Branden Smith arrested on marijuana possession charge in Alabama

ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia cornerback Branden Smith was arrested and charged with marijuana possession late Sunday, the third starter from last year’s team to be arrested in the offseason.

The junior was pulled over for having no tag light and following another vehicle too closely in Abbeville in southeastern Alabama, Henry County Sherriff William Maddox said. The arresting officer smelled marijuana in the car and found it under the back seat after a search, the sheriff said.

Smith could be suspended for at least a one game, Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity said.

Smith and a passenger in the car, Dazme Rayshaun Woods of Atlanta, face misdemeanor charges of possessing less than an ounce of marijuana.

Asked by The Associated Press if the marijuana found in his car belonged to him, Smith said “I’m not talking about that.”

Cy Waits: Will a plea deal end his Paris Hilton hangover?

Cy Waits appears to have reached a plea deal on charges stemming from his marijuana-related arrest last summer on the Las Vegas Strip — which brings him that much closer to finally slamming the door on the Paris Hilton chapter of his life.

Attorney Richard Schonfeld told the court Monday that Waits’ case “had been resolved,” the Las Vegas Sun reported. Schonfeld said a “miscommunication” resulted in his client not being present at what was to have been a preliminary hearing on charges of felony driving under the influence of marijuana and misdemeanor marijuana possession.

Justice of the Peace William Kephart held the matter over until Wednesday morning. “He’s going to be here Wednesday,” Schonfeld said outside the courtroom, according to the Sun, without sharing details regarding the a plea.

State to reduce penalty for possession of small amount of marijuana

Possession of less than half an ounce of marijuana may soon no longer be a crime in Connecticut.

While the State House of Representatives has yet to vote on it, the Senate passed a bill Saturday that would reduce the penalty for possessing up to half an ounce of marijuana from a crime to an infraction carrying a fine. After Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman, as president of the Senate, broke an 18–18 vote to carry the bill through, Gov. Dannel Malloy hailed it in a press release as an example of “common sense reforms to our criminal justice system.”

While the bill’s opponents in the Senate argued that decriminalizing marijuana sends the wrong message, proponents stressed the damage that young people can incur from a criminal record.

“We are acknowledging the reality that we are doing more harm than good when we prosecute people who are caught using marijuana — needlessly stigmatizing them in a way we would not if they were caught drinking underage, for example, and disproportionately affecting minorities,” Malloy said in the release.

AC/DC Drummer Has Marijuana Conviction Overturned

Phil Rudd, drummer for AC/DC, has had his recent conviction for marijuana possession overturned in New Zealand.

Rudd was fined in December after marijuana was found on his houseboat in Tauranga, New Zealand. While the fine was small, Phil was concerned that having the charge on his record would make it hard or impossible for him to enter some countries while on tour.

Judge Alayne Wills agreed with Rudd’s lawyer contention that making it hard for Rudd to tour could adversely affect others who depended on him and overturned the sentence; however, she ordered Rudd to pay $1,500 in legal and court fees, much higher than his original fine of $100.

AC/DC’s tour in 2010 sold $177 million worth of tickets, making it the second biggest tour of the year.
