SANTA CRUZ – A legal marijuana grow operation in a Nobel Drive garage went up in smoke Friday night in a small fire that a sprinkler system extinguished.
Fire crews estimated $10,000 to be lost in the blaze.
At 9:25 p.m., Santa Cruz fire arrived at the home on the 800 block of Nobel Drive. Smoke was seen coming from the second floor of a three story home. Fire crews found the fire was in the garage and a closed door prevented smoke and heat from spreading into the residence.
Additional crews entered the garage and found a moderate amount of smoke. The fire had been put out by a sprinkler system, according to fire officials.
Santa Cruz Battalion Chief Mike Venezio said the fire was accidental but the amount of plastics in the garage contributed to the start of the fire.
Fire units were on the scene for an hour and a half. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is being investigated.
This is the second fire in less than 24 hours that a sprinkler system prevented further loss by extinguishing the fires, Venezio said.
